The vibration of small roller causes vibration and impact in the compacted material. Under the action of vibration and impact, the particles of the compacted material transited from the static initial state to the moving state, and the friction between the compacted materials gradually entered the dynamic friction state from the initial static friction state. At the same time, the segregation of water in the material makes the outer layer of the material particles surrounded by a layer of water film, forming a lubricant for particle movement, which provides very favorable conditions for particle movement. There are many gaps of different sizes between the particles of the compacted material in the non-dense state. Under the effect of vibration and impact, the relative position of the particles of the compacted material changes and there is a phenomenon of mutual filling, that is, the gap formed by larger particles is filled by smaller particles, and the gap between smaller particles is filled by water. The content of air in the compacted material is also reduced during vibration and impact. The decrease of particle gap of compacted material means the increase of compactness; The reduction of the gap between the compacted materials will increase the indirect contact surface of the particles, resulting in the increase of the internal friction resistance of the compacted materials, which means the improvement of its bearing capacity.

Regardless of horizontal or vertical vibration of small roller, the principle of reducing the void ratio of compacted material under the action of vibration to make it more dense is consistent.
